(The Post News)- On Thursday, 19 September 2024, the Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Doctor Namane Masemola, will undertake ministerial support and intervention engagements with priority districts in the Free State province.
The engagements are strategically designed to facilitate a platform for a joint programme of action and implementation plan that will be monitored continuously to ensure that, “Every municipality works” to change material conditions of communities.
Within the context of the recent Auditor General’s report on the municipal finances, several municipalities performed poorly. “To this effect, deliberations will focus on the current state of the two district municipalities, which are Thabo Mofutsanyana, and Lejweleputswa district municipality,” cites Moferefere Moloi, Cogta spokesperson at the national level.
Moloi says enhancing accountability and ensuring sound leadership within the municipality will be a key fact. He continues saying addressing the challenges that hide the provision of essential services delivery, such as water, electricity, and waste management, will be an issue. He further says overcoming infrastructural shortcomings, particularly in the rural and traditional areas, will be thoroughly considered.
However, earlier, the Free State Cogta MEC, Saki Mokwena, attributes the failure of some municipalities to submit their financial statements to the AG primarily to capacity issues. He highlighted that many municipalities in the province are struggling because of their inability to attract and retain qualified personnel.
“These municipalities are among the worst performers failing to provide services to the frustrated residents,” concludes Mokwena.
Over the two days of the visit, Dr Masemola will be accompanied by the provincial Cogta MEC, Saki Mokwena, local and district mayors, Speakers, MMCs, Chief whips, and senior government officials.
