(The Post News)- In a candid and wide-ranging interview on SABC with Clement Manyathela, EFF leader Julius Malema opened up about a series of pressing issues, from personal losses within the party to national controversies that have long shadowed the organization.
Malema set the tone by first addressing the departure of his trusted ally, Floyd Shivambu, a decision that has raised eyebrows in political circles. He didn’t shy away from the emotional toll Shivambu’s exit had on him, acknowledging the pain of losing a close confidant but standing firm in the belief that the EFF has emerged stronger and more resilient without him. In a move that underscores his leadership philosophy, Malema emphasized that no one individual is indispensable to the party’s success.
From internal dynamics, the conversation swiftly pivoted to the EFF’s broader policies, particularly the contentious open borders policy. With public criticism mounting, Malema sought to clarify what he believes is a fundamental misunderstanding. Far from advocating for lawless immigration, he reiterated that the EFF envisions a future where all immigrants are documented and where African unity leads to shared economic development. This policy has, in his view, been mischaracterized, and he was clear that the EFF would not bend to xenophobic pressures, maintaining that inclusivity remains a cornerstone of the party’s vision for South Africa and the continent.
In the interview, Malema also touched on the EFF’s willingness to engage in discussions around a Government of National Unity (GNU). While some might interpret this as political pragmatism, Malema was quick to emphasize that any such negotiations would not come at the expense of the EFF’s core values. The party, he insisted, will not be swayed by political expediency, reiterating a firm commitment to its principles even as it considers future alliances .
No interview with the EFF leader would be complete without addressing the ongoing VBS Mutual Bank scandal, a controversy that has dogged the party for years. Malema used the platform to vehemently deny the party’s involvement, describing the accusations as politically motivated and designed to smear the EFF. He positioned the party as a target of unfounded attacks, dismissing any connection between the EFF and the collapse of the bank.
Through it all, Malema portrayed a vision of a party that is undeterred by internal challenges or external pressures, reaffirming the EFF’s stance on critical issues while setting the stage for what lies ahead.
