Sanral and N3TC announce reopening of Van Reenen’s Pass, commending rescue teams and stranded motorists for resilience and cooperation_
(The Post News)- A massive snowstorm that brought major routes on the N3 to a standstill has begun to dissipate, allowing the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) and its concessionaire, the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), to reopen the road at Van Reenen’s Pass.
Following a meticulous clearing operation, Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and N3TC route services have commenced escorting stranded road users out of the area in the southbound lanes towards KwaZulu-Natal. Gradually, graders and rescue teams are working to ensure a safe passage for those stranded near Swinburne and Montrose.
Sanral’s General Manager for Communications and Marketing, Vusi Mona, urged patience during this critical phase of the rescue and recovery operation. “We understand the frustration and discomfort caused by the snowstorm, but safety remains our top priority.”
The devastating snowstorm, which crippled major routes on the N3, left countless motorists stranded. Sanral and N3TC have advised road users to adhere to instructions from rescue teams and road traffic officials, driving slowly and with caution once given the green light to proceed.
In a heartfelt statement, Chief Operating Officer of the N3TC, Thania Dhoogra, expressed profound gratitude to disaster relief organizations, road incident management teams, humanitarian groups, local farmers, and community associations for their selfless efforts in providing emergency services and essential aid.
“Your dedication and compassion have been truly inspiring. You are the real heroes of the N3 Toll Route,” Dhoogra said.
Mona also commended stranded road users for their patience, vigilance, and compliance during the trying circumstances. “It’s been an incredibly challenging period, but your resilience and strong spirit have been remarkable.”
Rescue Efforts: A Testament to South African Resilience
The snowstorm’s impact was felt far and wide, with hundreds of motorists stranded overnight. However, the swift response of emergency services, coupled with the community’s generosity, has mitigated the crisis.
Local farmers and residents opened their homes, providing shelter and warmth to stranded travelers. Humanitarian organizations distributed food, blankets, and medical supplies, ensuring the well-being of those affected.
As the N3 Toll Route reopens, Sanral and N3TC reaffirm their commitment to ensuring the safety and convenience of road users.
