(The Post News)- A female patient aged 36 was discovered dead in a bathroom at Dr. George Mukhar Academic Hospital after she allegedly hanged herself with a phone charger cord.
According to Khutso Rabothata, the Gauteng Department of Health’s acting head of communication, the patient was admitted to the hospital on Saturday, September 21, 2024, and was being treated in ward 37.
A nurse making her rounds on Monday afternoon, September 23, 2024, realized that the bathroom door was locked and requested assistance from another nurse after repeated knocks without a response.
Rabothata further stated that the two nurses forcibly entered the door and found the patient hanging on a phone charger cord inside, and immediate attempts to resuscitate her were made, and she was pronounced dead by a doctor who was called on the scene. The hospital staff, who have been profoundly affected by this terrible incident, are receiving counseling and support.
The Gauteng Department of Health has conveyed its heartfelt sympathies to the deceased’s family and reaffirmed its commitment to offering sympathetic and secure medical services and intends to work toward combating such instances from recurring in the future.
The South African Police Services (SAPS) spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, confirmed that SAPS is aware of the incident and an investigation has been launched. According to Masondo, Garankuwa SAPS has filed an inquest concerning a death that is believed to be a suicide.
