(The Post News )- Israel has allegedly launched airstrikes in Yemen, aiming at installations associated with Houthis insurgents, as tensions in the region rise. This move has brought a further level of complication to the already tense political situation in the Middle East.
Eyewitnesses witnessed explosions in the northern area of Saada, a stronghold of the Houthis group, as well as close to the capital city of Sana’a. Even though Israeli officials have not confirmed the airstrikes, sources from the Yemeni government have confirmed significant damage to military sites.
The Lebanese health ministry said preliminary tolls showed 24 killed and 29 wounded in an Israeli strike near the main southern city of Sidon on Sunday. It later reported that Israeli air raids on the Baalbek-Hemel area of eastern Lebanon “killed 21 people and wounded 47”.
The attacks are thought to be a component of Israel’s larger plan to push back against Iranian control in the area. Iran has provided significant support to the Houthis in the long-standing Yemen civil war by supplying them with military assistance and technology, enhancing their strength in the conflict that has persisted for more than ten years.
This situation arises against a background of increased tensions after recent attacks on Israel and its allies. The Houthis have fired missiles and drones at targets in Saudi Arabia, as well as allied nations such as Israel. The Israeli bombings indicate a possible change in Israel’s military involvement outside its territory, sparking worries about a larger conflict.
Various countries have responded differently on the international stage. The Arab League criticized the airstrikes, deeming them a clear breach of Yemen’s sovereignty, and demanding Israel to halt its military actions.
During a Cairo meeting, the organization highlighted the importance of unity to tackle foreign interventions in Arab countries. On the flip side, some analysts propose that these actions could help bolster regional alliances in the face of shared challenges.
