Jimmy Carter’s remarkable life of service, leadership, and resilience is celebrated as he reaches a century milestone.
(The Post News) – Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, makes history on Tuesday by becoming the first U.S. president to reach the age of 100. President Joe Biden honored Carter’s legacy in a heartfelt video message, praising his “moral force” and “voice of courage, conviction, compassion.”
Born in Plains, Georgia,on October 1, 1924, Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and then joined the U.S. Navy. He later became Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.
During his presidency, Carter brokered the Camp David Accords, a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel, established diplomatic relations with China, and created the Department of Energy, Department of Education, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Carter’s administration championed regulations on auto emissions and seat-belt/airbag requirements, created Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday and led landmark conservation efforts in Alaska. His commitment to human rights, social justice, and environmental protection has left a lasting impact.
After leaving office, Carter and his wife Rosalynn founded the Carter Centre to promote peace, democracy, and public health. He engaged in intense public health efforts and democracy promotion abroad and worked with Habitat for Humanity. Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his post-presidency work.
Carter married Rosalynn Carter in 1946, and they were together for nearly eight decades until her passing in 2023. Despite entering hospice care in February 2023, Carter remains in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
Carter’s life exemplifies the power of conviction, compassion, and service. President Biden hailed Carter as a “beloved friend” and “moral force.” Celebrations in Plains included a naturalization ceremony, flyover, and ribbon-cutting for statues dedicated to the Bill of Rights and Constitution. Volunteers built 30 new homes in St. Paul, Minnesota, in honour of Carter’s birthday.
As the nation honors Carter’s 100th birthday, his legacy continues to inspire generations with his dedication to public service and moral leadership.
