Gospel star Dr. Winnie Mashaba is mourning the loss of her long time mentor, Solomon Molokoane, known as Solly Moholo.
(The Post News)- The South African gospel community is reeling from the loss of iconic musician Solly Moholo, who passed away yesterday at 65. Renowned gospel star Dr. Winnie Mashaba, who considered Moholo her mentor, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the legendary singer.
Solly Moholo, born Solomon Molokoane, left an indelible mark on the gospel music scene with his electrifying performances and signature “mokhukhu jive.” His discography boasts hits like “Banaka Nako Ea Me E Haufi” (“My Children, My Time Is Near”), which has taken on new significance since his passing. The song’s poignant lyrics, contemplating life’s final moments and the afterlife, resonate deeply.
Lines like “Ka letsatsi laka la bofelo geke tloga molefaseng” (“On my last days on earth”)”Mangeloi atla go ntsaya, go ntsaya ba mpitsa ko legodimong!” (“The angels will take me, calling me to heaven!”)”Morena ao mophelegetse ka thabo le ka kgotso ke ya gae” (“Oh God, accompany me with happiness and peace, I am going home”) offer a comforting message of peace and faith, symbolizing Moholo’s acceptance of the afterlife.
“I was young and clueless about the music industry,” Winnie Mashaba reflected on social media. “My mom handed me over to Malome Solly Moholo; he trained me and guided me throughout. Saying Rest in Peace, Malome Solly, is painful. Until we meet again.” said Winnie Moholo’s latest single, “Wubani o zo Pepeza,” was released on September 15.
Tragically, he fell ill during a pre-launch tour in Botswana and was hospitalized shortly after. His management team announced his passing, leaving fans and fellow musicians in shock.
The Molokoane family has requested privacy as they mourn and prepare for Moholo’s burial. Memorial and funeral details will be shared soon. Solly Moholo’s legacy will continue to inspire generations. His music, marked by faith and passion, remains a testament to his dedication to the gospel community.
