(The Post News)- In Bosnia and Herzegovina, several people have died in floods with several more gone missing as torrential rain and landslides have destroyed homes, roads and bridges throughout the centre of the country.
15 people reported dead and authorities says several people are still missing, and the army and local volunteers have been called in to help with the rescue mission.
The Municipality of Jablanica which is about 70km southeast of the capital, Sarajevo, which bore the brunt of 25 hours of downpours was completely cut off after road and railway links were destroyed.
Zukan Helez, Bosnia’s Defence Minister has told the media that the troops had been engaged to help in rescue and recovery missions.
The roads and train lines were swept away or blocked by debris, the Jablanca fire station, in Herzegovinian is completely inaccessible. The state rescue service said no one can get in or out of Jablanca at the moment, moreover landline phones are working but mobile phones have no signal.
With heavy rains and strong winds being reported in neighbouring Croatia where many roads have been closed and the capital of Zagreb has prepared for the swollen Sava River to burst its banks. Bosnia’s southeastern neighbour, Montenegro has also seen torrential rains, cutting villages and flooding roads and homes.
Local authorities have urged local residents to stay on upper floors of their homes and to not venture out onto flooded streets.
