The amazing career of the playmaker, who won the World Cup, Euro, and Champions League championships, came to an end.
(The Post News)- At the age of 40, former Barcelona player Andres Iniesta declared his retirement from football on Tuesday. His football resume includes victories with Spain in two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup.
During a press conference in Barcelona, an obviously distraught Iniesta informed reporters, “Being on the pitch is over. Football is my life and always will be my life, I cannot let it go. The next stage is for me to finish my education, therefore I’m working on my coaching diploma right now.”
“I’ll make a huge effort to return, but I won’t be chasing the ball; instead, I’ll be working from a different position,” he continued. After attending Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, Iniesta made his first-team debut in 2002 at the age of just 18.
He established himself as a midfield fixture before leaving the squad 16 years later. His biggest moment came in the 2010 World Cup final, when he scored the game-winning goal against the Netherlands in extra time. He won nine La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues with Barcelona.
Iniesta played one final season with Emirates of the United Arab Emirates after joining Japanese club Vissel Kobe for five years following his departure from Barcelona in 2018.
For his old teammate, Lionel Messi had some kind words to say. “One of my favorite teammates to play with, and one of the teammates with the most magic. We all will miss you, and the ball will too. You’re a phenomenon, and I wish you the greatest of luck always,” Lionel remarked.
