More than 10 000 voices stand strong: Women for Change challenges Chris Brown’s concert.
(The Post News)- Look like Women For Change (WFC) made a really big move last week when they released a petition stating that “no stage for Chris Brown in South Africa.” This organization called for the Department of Home Affairs to revoke his visa, preventing his entry into South Africa.
This move has sparked division among fans and GBV activists, highlighting the complexity of balancing activism with individual rights. It really came as a shock to have seen that more than 10,000 people have signed the petition. After a lot of people on social media came and mocked this organization, stating that it was unfair to Chris Brown, disputing his filling the stadium in a day and also extending a day, there are still people who do not approve his coming to South Africa.
Bulelwa Adonis, the spokesperson for WFC, expressed her concerns during an interview with Newzroom Afrika. She said that the ease with which the individual obtained a visa to enter South Africa, despite the country’s severe gender-based violence pandemic, is alarming and disheartening. Adonis mentioned the laxity in the system, which allows individuals like him to access the country, posing a potential threat.
The petition was set to reach 15k signatures; it came as a shock that within days it reached more than 17k today morning. These signatures show that the organization has reached its target market and passed it.
“In a country battling severe GBVF, South Africa should prioritize empowering survivors, not glorifying individuals with histories of violence through public platforms,” Said Adonis. WFC’s campaign has sparked a national conversation, highlighting the need for collective action against GBV. Now the organization awaits to hear what the government has to say about this issue.
