President Cyril Ramaphosa addressing the nation at Chief Albert Luthuli House, marking a centenary of days since the establishment of the GNU, a period characterised by significant strides towards a more inclusive and prosperous South Africa.
(The Post News)- The African National Congress (ANC marked a significant milestone celebrating 100 days since the establishment of the Government of National Unity Following the May 29th elections . This centennial commemoration took place at the Chief Albert Luthuli House, was both a celebration and a moment of reflection for ANC 7th administration, under the leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosaand the ANC took this opportunity to assess its achievements and outline the path forward.
For the first time since the end of apartheid in 1994, the ANC was compelled to form a coalition government following a disappointing performance in the May elections. The GNU, a coalition of various political parties, was established to ensure stability and governance in a politically fragmented landscape. This coalition has been a test of the ANC’s ability to adapt and collaborate with former rivals.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile, addressing the media ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s keynote address, declared the first 100 days a success. “The past 100 days have been very successful in our work,” Mashatile stated, emphasising the GNU’s role in fostering stability and a functional government.
President Ramaphosa, in his address, highlighted the unity and collective effort of the seventh administration, reflecting on the progress made towards stability and transformation. “This moment, as we reflect on the establishment of the GNU, we also reflect on the progress that has been made to bring stability into our country since the May elections,” he said.
President Ramaphosa highlighted the administration’s three strategic priorities that have guided the administration’s actions: driving inclusive growth and job creation, reducing poverty and tackling the high cost of living, and building a capable and ethical developmental state. These priorities resonate with the six key areas of the ANC’s manifesto and have been the cornerstone of the government’s agenda. The administration’s focus on economic growth has been met with increased confidence among South Africans, with business people and investors expressing positive sentiment.
The government’s efforts have been channelled into expanding and institutionalising various employment and development programs, such as the Presidential Employment Stimulus and the Expanded Public Works Programme, which have provided job opportunities and skills development, particularly for the youth. The Department of Employment and Labour has also been proactive in inspecting workplaces, ensuring compliance and fair labour practices.
Additionally, the successful implementation of the Energy Action Plan has resulted in 200 days without load shedding, marking a significant improvement in the country’s energy stability.
The GNU’s commitment to these initiatives reflects its dedication to fostering an environment conducive to economic growth and social development. As South Africa looks forward to continued progress, the government’s partnership with the business sector remains crucial in addressing challenges in energy, logistics, crime, and corruption.
