Planned water work in certain areas of Cape Town will encounter water supply disruption.
(The Post News)- The City of Cape Town has announced planned work in certain areas, resulting in water supply disruptions from Monday, October 14, to Friday, October 18. The planned work is critical to maintenance on the water-supply infrastructure.
Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, urged residents in affected areas to take note of the upcoming work and prepare accordingly. Residents are also advised to store enough water in advance as a precautionary measure, using clean, sealed containers.
The affected areas include Bloekombos, Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, Northpine, Brackenfell, Strand, Sea Point, Heinz Park in Philippi, and Hanover Park.
The City will shut down the Glen Garry Reservoir until Friday for essential annual cleaning and maintenance. Additionally, the Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant will undergo urgent maintenance.
Specific disruptions include the shutdown of the 100mm diameter water main in Church Street, Sea Point, until 6 pm on Tuesday, October 15, for a new connection. This will disrupt water supply along Church Street between Regent Road and Kloof Road.
A test shutdown will be implemented on the 300mm diameter water main to Heinz Park, The Leagues, and the SAPS college in Philippi from 9 am until 4 pm on Tuesday, October 15. This will allow the maintenance team to assess affected areas due to the actual shutdown for a network upgrade, scheduled from 9 am until 6 pm on Thursday.
Furthermore, the 300mm diameter main water supply in Govan Mbeki Road, Philippi, will be shut down from 8 am until 7 pm on Friday to upgrade water supply infrastructure and accommodate current road infrastructure upgrades in the area.
According to Badroodien, this work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade program. “This ensures future continuity of water supply by addressing unaccounted for water,” he said. “The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience.”
