The grade 1 and 8 Gauteng learners have been placed for the 2025 academic year, which is a good move for the MEC Matome Chiloane.
(The Post News)- Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane has confirmed the high number of grade 1 and 8 learners who have been placed in Gauteng for the 2025 academic year. Chiloane says out of 300,000 applicants, about 200,000 grade one and eight have been placed.
He was giving an update on the grade one and eight placement status at Edenvale High School in the east of Johannesburg on Monday. He, however, advised parents to apply for schools nearer to their homes rather than applying at the popular schools.
Meanwhile, appealing a case where learners who were accused of cheating in 2022 and won it in court doesn’t sit well with the education activist Hendrick Makaneta, who urged the Department of Education to withdraw it.
This follows the investigations that reveal similarly, both private and public school learners of over 1000 were found to have cheated. Makaneta understands the basic education department must consider finding the reason why most of the learners have cheated instead of appealing against the decision taken by the court.
According to him, the appeal may block the plans of the learners as they want to further their dreams of learning in higher education institutes. He says, “The decision of the Department of Education to appeal against these learners who were implicated in cheating is a very concerning development.”
