(The Post News)- Themba “Mshishi” Zwane, a talisman for Bafana Bafana, has a serious injury that might keep him out of action for months, according to coach Hugo Broos.
Zwane was taken off with a confirmed Achilles tendon tear during the first half of Bafana’s 1-1 draw with Republic of Congo in their CAF 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Group K qualifier on Tuesday in Brazzaville.
Broos also acknowledged that they struggled in the second half as they were unable to maintain control of the game due to the 35-year-old’s unscheduled departure. “It was not a good thing for us that Themba had to go out with an injury it’s a big injury, an Achilles, and I’m afraid he will be out for month.” stated Broos.
He added that losing a player of that caliber is difficult, especially when you are playing a dominant game and Themba has the ability to maintain the ball and make the last pass.
Broos also stated “So, he was not there and maybe that was also a reason why we didn’t play so well today.”
Following their 5-0 thumping of the same team last Friday in Gqeberha, Bafana were expected to win in Brazzaville to guarantee their spot in the AFCON championships in Morocco the following year.
The Belgian coach, though, maintains that his team’s tardiness in reserving their spots for the continental final would not cause him any sleepless nights. “No, as our circumstances are the same. We still require a triumph. We will qualify if we defeat South Sudan or Uganda,” he declared.
