(The Post News)- The United States has issued a stern warning to Israel, demanding that they improve humanitarian aid access in Gaza within the next 30 days or risk losing US military assistance. This move comes as the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with violence escalating and essential goods and services severely restricted due to Israel’s blockade.
According to reports, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sent a letter to Israeli officials, stating that the US government is deeply concerned about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and seeking urgent action to reverse the situation. The letter also highlighted that September was the worst month for relief efforts in the past year, with aid deliveries dropping by over 50% since spring.
The US is pressing Israel to allow a minimum of 350 trucks per day through four border crossings and open a fifth crossing to facilitate aid delivery. Additionally, the US wants Israel to address civilian deaths and establish a new channel to discuss these incidents.
Israel’s blockade has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with reports of malnutrition, hospital strikes, and severe restrictions on aid delivery. The US ultimatum raises questions about the effectiveness of using military aid as a lever to promote humanitarian goals, but the intention is clear: to pressure Israel into taking action to address the crisis.
The potential consequences of cutting off military assistance to Israel are significant, given the country’s reliance on US aid. Israel receives billions of dollars in assistance each year, and any reduction could impact its security and defense capabilities. The outcome of this ultimatum will have far-reaching implications for both countries and the broader Middle East region.
