(The Post News)- Siya Kolisi, South African rugby star, returns to the Sharks after an early exit from Racing 92 in France, citing family challenges. He joins forces with Eben Etzebeth to help the Sharks bounce back in the United Rugby Championship.
Kolisi and Etzebeth, two of South Africa’s rugby stalwarts, reunite at the Sharks in Durban for the 2024-25 season. Their return brings excitement, leadership, and experience to the squad as the Sharks aim to recover from a shaky start in the United Rugby Championship (URC).
Kolisi’s stint abroad was marked by injuries, limiting him to 18 appearances. However, his family’s struggle to adjust to life in Paris was the decisive factor in his return. “My family have missed South Africa, and it is time to come home,” Kolisi shared.
Despite enjoying the camaraderie at Racing, Kolisi prioritized his family’s happiness, requesting an early release from his contract. Racing 92 honored his request, and Kolisi expressed gratitude.
Kolisi’s return to the Sharks marks an exciting chapter for the 33-year-old flanker. “My family and I love Durban and its people, and I cannot wait to run onto Kings Park during the 2024-25 season,” Kolisi added. With his proven leadership, having captained South Africa to two Rugby World Cup victories (2019 and 2023), he will play a crucial role in the Sharks’ quest for success.
Eben Etzebeth welcomed Kolisi’s return with joy, exchanging friendly banter. Their reunion represents an opportunity for the Sharks to benefit from two of South Africa’s most influential players.
The Sharks had a rough start to the URC, suffering a 38-10 defeat to Benetton. However, the return of Kolisi and other Springboks offers hope. Coach John Plumtree will integrate these seasoned players into the squad.
Alongside Kolisi and Etzebeth, the Sharks boast a formidable forward pack with stars like Ox Nche and Bongi Mbonambi. This depth in talent positions the Sharks as strong contenders in the league.
With renewed energy, leadership, and fan support, the team is poised to make a strong comeback. Kolisi and Etzebeth’s return reaffirms the allure of South African rugby, reflecting the importance of balancing personal priorities with professional ambitions.
As these rugby legends take the field at Kings Park once more, fans can look forward to thrilling moments and renewed hope for the Sharks’ season.
