(The Post News)- The CMG Spring Festival Gala, China’s most-watched TV program, has made its way to South African audiences. This iconic event, broadcast since 1983, highlights China’s vibrant culture. The Spring Festival Gala is a cherished Chinese New Year’s Eve tradition.
Airing from evening to midnight, the gala features carefully selected performances: songs, dances, sketches, and acrobatics. This spectacle attracts over a third of China’s 1.4 billion population. CMG’s 2024 Spring Festival Gala was broadcast globally on February 9, showcasing China’s achievements and national pride through a multimedia presentation.
In South Africa, home to 300,000 Chinese expats, the event sparked festive excitement. On February 4, Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg hosted a Spring Festival pop-up event. The CMG’s promotional video played on the big screen, captivating locals.
Bruce Xiaoyong Li, Executive Director of BrandChina, emphasized the importance of sharing Chinese culture abroad. “We look forward to spreading Chinese culture and enhancing civilizational exchanges,” he said. Nada Wotshela, SABC Radio Executive, praised the gala for highlighting colorful Chinese culture to South African audiences.
The gala’s global impact surpassed earlier records. VK, Russia’s largest social media platform, broadcast the event live, drawing 2.6 million viewers. Tshilidzi Munyai, a member of the Gauteng province Legislature, congratulated China on the 41st anniversary of the CMG gala dinner.
“You can see the efforts of the Chinese people; how do we happen to be part of this CMG gala dinner. I congratulate you for the 41st anniversary of this CMG gala dinner, which is a very, very fantastic experience, and I’m sure the Chinese people are very happy because the economy for the past ten years has grown tremendously and the Chinese are trying to be self-sustainable, but also importantly, China has become a very stable country, very peaceful country, and I’m sure the growth of their economy, they want to share with the rest of the world, that is very exciting to me.”
The CMG Spring Festival Gala bridges cultural divides, promoting mutual understanding between China and nations like South Africa. As the gala continues to captivate global audiences, its significance extends beyond entertainment, fostering international cooperation and appreciation.
