(The Post News)- The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has sounded the alarm, urging farmers and rural communities to take immediate action. A severe fire danger alert from the South African Weather Service necessitates proactive measures to prevent devastating wildfires.
To mitigate this risk, farmers must enforce total outdoor fire bans, establish wide, inflammable-material-free fire breaks, relocate livestock to secure areas, and join local fire protection associations. These measures ensure the safety of people, livestock, and property. Pelane Phakgadi, spokesperson for Limpopo MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasized, “Collective vigilance is crucial. Proactive steps safeguard lives, livelihoods, and our environment. We urge farmers to report any fires promptly and stay informed through reliable sources.”
The National Veld and Forest Fire Act fosters cooperation among farmers, authorities, and fire protection associations to prevent and manage veld fires effectively.
