(The Post News)- A series of marine life encounters has prompted the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) to issue a warning to beach goers, emphasizing the importance of coastal safety in Cape Town.
On Saturday, a 65-year-old man was injured in a suspected shark attack at Blue Waters Beach. Quick-thinking bystanders responded, and lifeguards provided medical attention, stabilizing the victim before transporting him to the hospital. In another incident, a swimmer at Bloubergstrand Beach was bitten by a seal. Lifeguards intervened swiftly, advising the victim to seek medical attention for minor injuries.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon cautioned against complacency. “Summer months bring increased marine activity. We urge beach goers to exercise caution when engaging with coastal waters,” said Lambinon.
The incidents highlight coastal safety concerns, underscoring the need for vigilance. Authorities recommend swimming at protected beaches, avoiding areas with bait-fish, and staying informed about marine conditions. NSRI and Western Province Lifesaving have increased patrols and surveillance. City of Cape Town Emergency Services remain on high alert.
