Rachel Kutumela, who is accused of murdering her family for insurance policy payout, is back in the Limpopo Magistrate’s Court to court to apply for bail.
(The Post News)- Sergent Rachel Reasetsa Shokane Kutumela appears before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court to apply for bail. She is facing charges of murdering her family members over insurance policy claims in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.
Kutumela was apprehended on October 11 at her place of work in Senwabarwana police station, Limpopo. Two weeks after her arrest, her 43-year-old sister Annah Shokane and her 23-year-old daughter, Madjadji Flora Shokane, were added to the police docket. They all face numerous charges, including 12 counts of fraud, six counts of murder, obtaining proceeds from illegal acts, obstructing justice, and money laundering.
According to Mashudu Malabi Dzhangi, the money laundering charges especially pertain to Rachel and her daughter. Dzhangi went on to state that Rachel and her sister purportedly took up life, accidental, and funeral insurance coverage for multiple victims and then claimed over R20 million, which they split amongst themselves. Dzhangi explained that several service providers, including ABSA, Standard Bank, Capitec, Assupol, Old Mutual, Onelife, and Clintele, were used to make the payouts.
The murders occurred between 2000 and 2024, and victims were discovered dead in different circumstances. According to Dzhangi, some of the occurrences were shocking, such as a woman being burned in her shack and a crippled man being drowned in a dam. Furthermore, Dzhangi stated the fatalities happened in areas such as Soweto, Seshego, Lebowakgomo, Sebokeng, and Matlerekeng.
It is alleged that amongst the victims, some were direct relatives of the accused. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, October 30, the court was adjourned to Thursday, October 31, while the suspects remain in detention.
