The Department of Education in Free State has responded to the voice note circulating on social media regarding the death of a 16-year-old Kabelo Chaka. It was alleged that Chaka was killed within the school premises by his fellow schoolmates; however, the department has stated that these allegations are false.Â
Â
According to Howard Ndaba, the department’s spokesperson, the allegations that Chaka was murdered within school premises are false. Ndaba asserted that the incident occurred about 720 meters away from the school. He went on to say that although the department is aware of the audio message that is making the rounds on WhatsApp and is concerned about this occurrence, people should refrain from disseminating misleading information.
Â
Moreover, Ndaba stated that the police also confirmed that the incident occurred outside school premises, and the department understands that any death, especially of a young person under such circumstances, is regrettable irrespective of where it happened. The department condemns all forms of violence, including the barbaric killing of Chaka, and extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, learners, and teachers about what happened.Â
