Atalanta startled the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium by sweeping away the host team’s unbeaten streak dating back to August 18. Napoli was aiming to take a seven-point lead over Inter Milan, who played late and won. Yet they are still chasing the first position behind Napoli.
Nigerian international Lookman, who was born in London, beat Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret from close range after Marten de Roon’s header dropped for him in the tenth minute. Just after the break, he curled a beautiful shot to double Atlanta’s lead, but Napoli coach Antonio Conte was incensed that his defense allowed Lookman to shoot.
Scott McTominay, a former Manchester United midfielder, hit the post with the best of the few chances the home team created. Before the three games later in the day, Atalanta was allowed to celebrate as Mateo Retegui scored his third goal in injury time, his eleventh of the season, putting them on 22 points and in second position in the standings.
