(The Post News)- The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has been asked by the attorney for striker Samir Nurkovic in the Royal AM case to intervene and reimburse the player for the money owed through the club’s R2-million monthly stipend.
Davor Lazic acknowledged his plea to the league in an exclusive interview with SABC Sport after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) recently dismissed Royal AM’s application to have their FIFA transfer restriction lifted. In addition to the costs of the arbitration at CAS, the lawyer clarified, “they (Royal AM) need to pay the legal fees and of course the main amount together with the interest, which is at five percent at the moment.”
The official amount Royal AM owes Nurkovic, including interest, is R15 million, according to the document detailing the tribunal’s decision. By imposing a garnishee order on the grant, Lazic verified that the player’s camp had asked SAFA and the PSL to intervene.
“We requested that the money owed to the club be subtracted, in accordance with their own regulations. As you are aware, the club gave the league permission to take this money out of their account by consenting to join the PSL. Our only request is that the league pay the player and abide by its own regulations, ” said Lazic.
The amount given to Nurkovic would be R14 million if the PSL continued this practice through the June season finale. FIFA may also dock Royal AM points, a situation that happened in 2018 when the PSL disciplined AmaZulu for disregarding a CAS decision on the illegal termination of Namibian player Phinheas Nambandi’s contract. Since FIFA originally heard the matter in 2014, Usuthu has been fined six points for being late with payments.
He added, “We may also request additional suspensions, which might result in a point deduction and relegation to a lesser division. In addition to the transfer prohibition, a number of other penalties may still be relevant.
However, since it would have affected the league standings and many other games already played, it would be wise for the league and the club to avoid following this trend at this time. Paying the player is the greatest option,” Lazic continued.
The PSL did suspend the club’s DStv Diski Challenge team from the reserve league after the KwaZulu-Natal team was unable to honor fixtures, but Royal AM has yet to make any public remarks since the CAS verdict. This resulted from a lack of players because FIFA ban.
