(The Post News)- Fans of the Paris Saint-German team were seen waving a huge banner that read “free Palestine” during last Wednesday’s Champions League game. The interior minister of France stated that there was no connection between the banner and football.
Ahead of PSG’s loss to Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, the enormous banner spanned a whole portion of the stadium at their home field, Parc des Princes in Paris.
The banner featured the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, a little boy draped in a Lebanese flag, a bloodstained Palestinian flag, a guy gesturing with a keffiyeh scarf covering all of his face but his eyes, and the words “Free Palestine.”
It was demonstrated as international concern over civilian losses escalates as Israel intensifies its operations against the militant Shiite group Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza. “This banner had no place in this stadium,” Bruno Retailleau, a right-wing Interior Minister, tweeted on X.
He added that such activities were prohibited by both French football and UEFA. “I ask PSG to explain itself and the clubs to ensure that politics does not come to damage sport, which must always remain a source of unity.
If this were to happen again, we will have to consider forbidding banners for clubs that do not enforce the rules,” he continued.
Retailleau did not try to hide his ire when he called the banner “unacceptable” in a subsequent interview with Sud Radio. “I’d like to learn more about how this banner was unfurled. What transpired was explained by Laurent Nunez, the head of the Paris police. We made certain agreements, but I’m seeking accountability,” he concluded.
