(The Post News)- Setumo Motsei, an irate student at the University of South Africa (Unisa), registered for an honors program in statistics in 2012 but failed to complete it for nearly ten years.
Â
Motsei, a 36-year-old resident of Soshanguve, Pretoria North, has spoken up about his feelings after finding it difficult to accept that he hasn’t completed his studies in the allotted period. Motsei feels that the department supervisor betrayed him. When he began his postgraduate degree at the university, everything went smoothly at first. However, after enrolling in the Research Project in Statistics in 2014, he began to encounter challenges in his profession.
Â
He explained his difficulties in finishing his studies, claiming that problems occurred when the department assigned him a supervisor, Professor Edmore Ranganai. According to him, Professor Ranganai was of little use to him. After failing to work hands-on with Professor Ranganai, he further requested the department for another supervisor, and then the head of the department, Professor Eeva Rapoo, decided to be his new supervisor. Instead, things turned from better to worse, as nothing was good music to his ears.
Â
He claims Rapoo was always unavailable and knowingly let him down. He argues that his final work was not awarded fair scores after marking, even though he deserved to receive more than 70% pass; he was only given a 40% mark, which was unfair to him. He, however, took his dissatisfaction to the university’s ombudsman, who did not deal with it as per his expectation. Meanwhile, Unisa further confirmed the ombudsman had assisted Motsei by recommending that he register for the new module.
