(The Post News)- The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) ramped up its efforts to combat illegal spaza shop activities and public health violations across Tshwane on Monday, November 11, 2024. Conducting a high-density operation in collaboration with other authorities, TMPD focused on stores in Pretoria North’s Akasia Precinct and Soshanguve Ext 1, with an emphasis on shops selling expired food, and other unlawful goods.
During the operation, officers inspected eight stores, all found to contain expired items. Seven stores were issued Section 56 infringement notices, amounting to R25,000 in fines, and one store was shut down for violating food safety regulations. Two shops were also found with illegal cigarettes, while three others were selling alcohol without the required licenses.
Six store owners, identified as undocumented immigrants, were detained and taken to local police stations. TMPD officers seized illegal alcohol and cigarettes, which were logged as evidence.
The TMPD is committed to public safety and law enforcement, and it promises to continue to work to protect community health and address unauthorized business practices across the city.
