(The Post News)– Sources have reported that Elon Musk met with Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations on Monday to talk about finding solutions to ease tensions between Iran and America.
According to The Times, two Iranian officials mentioned that the conversation on Monday between Musk, a strong supporter of President-elect Donald Trump, and Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani focused on ways to reduce tensions between the U.S. and Iran. One official claimed that Musk was the individual who asked for the meeting. The encounter between the technology mogul and Amir Saeid Iravani went on for over 60 minutes and took place at an undisclosed venue in New York.
This week, it was announced that Musk and Ramaswamy will be leading the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the future Trump administration. During Trump’s initial presidential term, he pulled the U.S. out of the nuclear agreement, a pact from 2015 between Iran and multiple global powers. This deal required Tehran to scale back its nuclear activities and permit increased inspections of its nuclear facilities in return for eased sanctions.
During his time in office, he also enforced restrictions on Iranian oil income and global banking activities. According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, Trump intends to significantly ramp up sanctions to cut off Iran’s oil revenue, which the U.S. Energy Information Administration stated amounted to $144 billion from 2021 to 2023 and $34 billion in 2024.
Furthermore, Trump instructed the 2020 killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, who was referenced in a Justice Department statement released last week regarding a foiled Iranian scheme to assassinate Trump. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi went on to refute the accusations made by the U.S.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, prohibited talks with the previous administration of Trump, yet five Iranian officials mentioned the possibility of a potential agreement between Washington and Tehran during Trump’s return to the presidency, as reported earlier by the Times. Even though he is not a government official, Musk has had a notable impact on the Trump campaign and reportedly attended almost every meeting to select the President-elect’s new cabinet, as per The Times.
His consistent proximity to the President-to-be has resulted in him being known as the “First Buddy.” According to The Times, an Iranian government official mentioned that the self-proclaimed “First Buddy” initiated the meeting and the ambassador selected the location. After declaring his support for Trump, Musk invested over $100 million of his personal funds into Trump’s campaign and appeared publicly in support of Trump in Pennsylvania, a key swing state. He also shared a constant flow of pro-Trump content with his 200 million+ followers through his X account.
Trump has openly expressed admiration for Musk’s contributions to the campaign. During the election night party in Florida hosted by Trump, Musk was the special guest who engaged in private conversations with Trump and was acknowledged in the president-elect’s speech to his supporters.
At the same time, the president-elect revealed on Tuesday that Musk and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, who competed against Trump in the 2024 Republican primary, will lead his planned Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). DOGE will collaborate with the White House and OMB outside of the government to implement significant structural changes and introduce an innovative approach to governance.
