(The Post News)- Doctor Elliot Shevel, a Headache Clinic specialist who is facing murder charges, has been released on R5,000 bail. He was arrested just before noon on Thursday at his Illovo home.
The 81-year-old well-known doctor Shevel appeared at the Randburg Magistrates Court on Thursday, 15 September 2024, with a charge of murder linked to one of his patients, Marinella Avvakoumides, who died hours after receiving treatment.
Shevel, who established the Headache Clinic in 1992, is alleged to have performed his eponymous Shevel desensitization procedure on Avvakoumides. The procedure involves injecting her with a thick needle at the back of the skull to “permanently numb” pain signals from tendons connecting the neck muscle to the skull. The deceased was rushed to the Fourways Life Hospital after undergoing the procedure. Unfortunately, she arrived unresponsive and was taken off life support eight days later.
When addressing the court, Prosecutor Yusuf Baba stated that Dr. Shevel is engaged in other cases after more patients and families came forward with additional information. Baba further said Dr. Shevel was ordered not to interfere with the witnesses and must hand himself at the Rosebank police station every Wednesday and Friday. Additionally, Shevel must not leave Gauteng without informing the investigative officer first, and he must hand over his valid South African passport and an expired Irish one to the investigative officer as per bail requirements.
The state did not oppose Shevel’s bail. Furthermore, the matter is currently being investigated by police officials, and Shevel is expected to return to court on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
