(The Post News)- President Biden has authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range missiles, known as Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), for strikes inside Russia. This decision marks a significant shift in U.S. policy, coming in response to Russia’s surprise deployment of North Korean troops to the conflict. The move aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly in the Kursk region, where Russian and North Korean forces pose a threat.
Biden’s decision was prompted by Russia’s cross-border assault on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, in May. To counter this, the U.S. initially allowed Ukraine to use High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) with a range of approximately 50 miles against Russian forces directly across the border ¹. However, the longer-range ATACMS, with a range of about 190 miles, were not initially permitted for use in defense of Kharkiv.
One key objective of this policy change is to send a strong message to North Korea: their forces are vulnerable, and further deployment would be unwise. By authorizing Ukraine to use ATACMS, the U.S. aims to demonstrate its commitment to Ukraine’s defense and deter North Korea’s involvement.
While officials do not expect this shift to fundamentally alter the course of the war, concerns have been raised about potential Russian retaliation against the U.S. and its coalition partners. Some U.S. officials fear that Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles across the border could prompt President Putin to respond with force. However, others consider these fears exaggerated.
Biden’s decision comes just two months before President-elect Donald J. Trump takes office, having vowed to limit further support for Ukraine. This shift in policy has divided Biden’s advisers, underscoring the complexities of the conflict.
NATO has condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine, reaffirming its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The organization has also taken steps to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities, including providing military aid and training.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant humanitarian consequences, including civilian casualties and displacement. The international community continues to call for a peaceful resolution, with organizations like the United Nations providing critical aid and support.
President Biden’s decision to authorize Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles marks a significant escalation in the conflict.
