Some of the family members who have been arrested are waiting with hope to see their loved ones released from prison.
(The Post News)- Since Sunday, 17 November 2024, at least 131 out of roughly 2000 Venezuelan prisoners have been released from prisons after disputed presidential elections in the capital city, Tocoron.
Hundreds of people gathered outside Tocoron prison with the hope of seeing their loved ones who had been arrested, as the officials have announced a plan to release more than 200 prisoners. The announcement left about 18,000 families hoping their loved ones were also among those who were freed.
All those who were arrested are being charged with terrorism, an accusation that has become a common way to target political foes, but most of them have denied the charges as their families stated they have not committed any crime. When bragging about packing Tocoron with his political opponents, the country’s President Nicolas Maduro referred to them as “fascist criminals” just a few weeks ago.
However, Tamara Taraciuk Broner, Venezuelan expert for the Inter-America Dialogue, sees things differently, as he believes the release of prisoners is almost connected to political interest. According to Broner, Maduro is simply trying to communicate with President-elect Donald Trump that he is willing to reduce human rights breaches in exchange for favorable treatment.
In conclusion, William Saab, Venezuela’s attorney general, believes those who are still imprisoned may be charged with serious crimes. He states his office has not received any complaints of human rights violations during the protests or the arrests.
