(The Post News)- An internal investigation, led by Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, has been launched into the R36 million Farmyard Project. This project aimed to establish container stores in townships, providing small-scale entrepreneurs with vital market access and promoting good nutrition.
The project, launched six months ago, has yet to deliver. Danisile Sathekge, spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, claims an initial payment was allocated to establish 16 containers, each costing R1.75 million. However, these figures seem inflated compared to market rates for similar structures, prompting a reassessment of the costing model.
Ramokgopa emphasizes her commitment to responsible public fund use, stating she will not tolerate abuse or inefficiency. She notes service providers have become comfortable providing inflated services and products to the government.
Ramokgopa suspended further funding and submitted a formal deviation request to the National Department of Agriculture and the Conditional Grant. The investigation will determine the project’s true cost and whether original plans were met. The containers’ existence and functionality will also be investigated.
The Department remains committed to supporting township entrepreneurs and the township economy, emphasizing prudent public fund use and sound governance practices.
Sathekge stated the MEC of Agriculture and senior officials will engage all stakeholders regarding the matter.
