Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensy reacts to U.S President Joe Biden’s permission to use U.S long-rang weapons to strike inside Russian territories.
(The Post News)- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s reaction to Biden’s announcement was short and direct, and he said, “strikes are not carried by words, missiles will speak for themselves.” In October, President Zelensky officially confirmed that Ukraine had for the first time used its long-range missiles to strike Russia’s eastern part, following the country’s battle to push back Russian troops who had been looking to attack the eastern Donetsk region, a major supply hub for Ukrainian forces.
President Joe Biden gave Ukraine the green light to use long-range American weapons to strike inside Russia; however, the weapons may only be used for limited strikes and only in Russian territory bordering northeast Ukraine. This comes after Russia launched what is believed to be its biggest arranged attacks in months, in which at least 10 people lost their lives as close to 120 missiles and 90 drones were launched.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an amended nuclear doctrine that declares any attack on Russia by any nation supported by a nuclear power will be considered a joint attack on his country. Putin signed the new amendments to the nuclear policy on the 1,000th day since he sent troops into Ukraine on February 24, 2022. President Putin first announced changes in the nuclear doctrine in September, warning the U.S. and other North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) confederations that allowing Ukraine to use longer-range Western-supplied weapons to hit Russian territory would mean a war between Russia and NATO was brewing.
President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied missiles has been met with mixed reactions within and around the United States. On one hand, the president’s move is deemed a significant boost to Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly in its efforts to reclaim territories from Russia. On the other hand, concerns linger about the risk that this decision may escalate the conflict and increase the risk of Russian nuclear use.
The attacks on Russia have continually raised tensions, and further loosening restrictions on U.S.-supplied weapons could potentially lead to more sensitive targets being hit. This, in turn, could prompt Russia to retaliate, potentially drawing the United States into a high-stakes crisis. China has strongly criticized the United States’ decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S. missiles to strike targets inside Russia, warning that such a move could add fuel to the conflict and delay peace efforts.
While the U.S. decision aims to support Ukraine’s defense, it also carries high risks and implications for regional and global security.
