(The Post News)- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have warrants of arrest issued against them by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on war crimes charges pertaining to the Gaza Strip. The warrants of arrest were requested by the ICC’s chief prosecutor in May 2024.Â
Â
In relation to the October 7, 2023, attack on the Gaz, Netanyahu and Gallant have been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity. The ICC released a statement on Thursday, November 21, saying that it had found grounds to suspect Netanyahu and Gallant of war crimes. The charges also include crimes against humanity such as murder, starvation as a weapon of war, persecution, and other inhumane acts. Additionally, the two are also charged with delivering a devasting blow to the reputation of Israel around the world while it continues to fight conflicts on several fronts.Â
Â
The ICC also issued a warrant of arrest for Hamas military leader, Chief Muhammed Deif, charging him with crimes against humanity. According to the ICC, the panel of three judges found justifications to charge Deif with war crimes and crimes against humanity that include killing, torturing, rape, and hostage-taking in connection to the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Reports state that on October 7 of last year, Hamas soldiers killed over 1,200 people, the majority of whom were Israeli civilians, and abducted 250. Although Israel claims to have assassinated Deif in an airstrike, the court indicated that it was unable to corroborate this and will investigate to determine if Deif was dead or alive.
Â
Responding to the accusations, Netanyahu’s office dissented them, saying that they are ridiculous and untrue, and Israel will continue fighting in Gaza to protect its civilians. Netanyahu’s office further stated that the Prime Minister will not succumb to the pressures; he will not withdraw or flinch before the goals that were laid out in the beginning of the war are accomplished.Â
Â
Israel denied engaging in war crimes in Gaza and rejected the jurisdiction of the court. Nontheless, the pre-trial panel has stated that Palestine was admitted as a member of the court since 2015; therefore, the ICC did not need Israel to probe crimes on Palestinian territory. The court further dismissed an application by Israel to have the warrants suspended, stating that the authorities of Israel were notified of an earlier ICC probe in 2021, and Israel chose not to submit any application for the suspension of the probe.Â
Â
Netanyahu and Gallant face arrest if they visit any of the 124 nations that signed the Rome Statute, which established the ICC.
