(The Post News)- On Sunday, 24 November, the ANC and SACP held their first bilateral meeting since the May elections at Luthuli House in Johannesburg. The meeting aimed to address the escalating tensions between the two parties due to the SACP’s dissatisfaction with the ANC’s coalition with the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Dr. Alex Mashilo of the SACP expressed that the disapproval of the coalition stems from the numerous policy oppositions between the ANC and DA. “The DA is opposed to many ANC policies, such as transformation in education, the National Health Insurance (NHI), and the National Minimum Wage. We don’t like the DA because there’s a clash in material interests,” Dr. Mashilo stated.
Although General Secretary of the SACP Solly Mapaila described the GNU coalition as a betrayal of the National Democratic Revolution principle, the ANC and SACP hope to engage in productive discussions that will result in a positive outcome. “We came here because we are looking for a positive outcome. This is in the interest of the people of our country. So, definitely, there is no doubt we need positive outcomes where we are both happy, but that does not mean we abandon our existence as independent organizations,” Dr. Mashilo stated.
ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri emphasized that despite the occurring disagreements between the ANC and SACP, the alliance stays strong. “We’re the oldest alliance, and it’s essential that we get along for the interest of the people of this country. We need to work together to deliver basic services that our people have been yearning for. We need to create jobs,” said Bhengu-Motsiri.
