(The Post News)- Fire and disaster services deployed 36 trucks and four fire boats while the Philippine Air Force sent in two helicopters to help extinguish the fire that ate almost a thousand homes and left about 2,000 people homeless in the capital, Manila, on Sunday morning.
Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties yet about the fire that burned for almost eight hours.
When speaking to the media organizations, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna said some residents have already been evacuated to the Del Pan Evacuation Centre, and the local government will ensure that the victims receive cash aid, food, and materials to rebuild their homes.
Lacuna further states that Isla Puting Beto is no longer a place to keep the evacuees. Therefore, the local government will explore options for relocating those who are affected.
Although no cause of the fire has been identified yet, a firefighter, Geanelli Nunez, says most of the houses there are made of light materials and blazes in Manila are often caused by faulty electrical wiring.
One of the residents, Elvira Valdermoro (58), said when the fire started, she only managed to save the lives of her five children and 18 dogs, but she’s worried about what she and her family are going to eat.
Another resident, Leonila Abiertas (65) said she lost almost everything belonging to her during the fire. She only managed to save her husband’s ashes. She is deeply concerned about how she is going to start life again after this fire.
