(The Post News)- South Africa is taking a bold step towards making history by bidding to host the 2036 Olympic Games, potentially bringing the prestigious event to Africa for the first time. A South African delegation, led by Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, met with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Switzerland to begin discussions.
The talks marked the initiation of “Continuous Dialogue,” a non-binding phase where prospective hosts explore the feasibility of their bids. South Africa’s interest aligns with IOC President Thomas Bach’s recent call for African nations to step forward, emphasizing the continent’s rising potential.
Key figures from SASCOC, including President Barry Hendricks, joined McKenzie in presenting South Africa’s vision. A feasibility study will soon assess possible host cities, with the government set to make a final decision based on the findings.
This bid comes after South Africa’s success in hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup and reflects a broader push to spotlight African culture and capability on the world stage. However, competition is fierce, with nations like India and Qatar also eyeing the 2036 Games.
If successful, South Africa’s bid could transform perceptions of African infrastructure and sporting potential, bringing unparalleled global attention to the continent.
