(The Post News)- United States (US) President Joe Biden has pledged US involvement in a peaceful Syrian transition. This comes after the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s government, following a successful rebel assault led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Assad has reportedly escaped to Moscow.
In his address from the White House, Biden emphasized the need for a seamless transition to an independent, sovereign Syria with a new constitution. This would mark the end of over 50 years of Assad family governance. Biden also stressed that Assad must be held accountable for his authoritarian rule.
The US aims to collaborate with global allies and Syrian groups to ensure a stable transition. With Assad gone, Syria enters a new phase, and the international community has a crucial role in supporting its shift toward democracy and addressing the humanitarian crisis.
