Mamelodi Sundowns have sucked the second coach in a space of less than a year. Opening the door for the Portuguese tactician coach, Miguel Cardoso.
(The Post News)- On Tuesday afternoon, Mamelodi Sundowns revealed its new coaching staff, replacing existing head coach Manqoba Mnqithi and his tactical team, Windell Robinson and Romain Folz. The team announced Miguel Cardoso as its new head coach.
Mnqithi took over after Rulani Mokwena, who now manages Wydad Casablanca in Morocco, stepped down. Mngqithi leaves the Chloorkop-based club at the top of the Betway Premiership after eight matches, tied with Orlando Pirates; nevertheless, chairman Thlopie Motsepe claimed that the standards and performance of the club have dropped.
Under Mngqithi, who arrived at the club as Pitso Mosimane’s assistant in 2014, the Brazilians also failed to win the MTN8 as well as the Carling Knockout, in which they lost the final to top-flight newcomers Magesi FC in this campaign.
Masandawana has had a similarly poor start to the Champions League group stages, drawing two successive games against AS Maniema Union of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and AS FAR of Morocco, and they are presently second in Group B.
Motsepe further confirmed that Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene will stay on as part of Cardoso’s technical team. “We feel that our standards recently had dropped and the type of football we wanted did not meet the mandate and expectations of the club,” said the chairman.
The 52-year-old Portuguese has to ensure that the club retains its dominance in South African football. Miguel, who last coached Esperance de Tunis, brings in a wealth of experience, which makes him a suitable candidate for the position.
