(The Post News)- Donald Trump has expressed strong opposition to President Biden’s decision to lift the ban on US-supplied long-range missiles to Ukraine. In an interview with Times Magazine, Trump called the move “crazy” and an “escalation,” arguing that sending missiles hundreds of miles into Russia would only worsen the war. Trump’s stance is contrary to Biden’s authorization of the use of US-supplied long-range missiles, including ATACMS missiles, which can hit targets up to 300km away.
The decision to lift the ban came after appeals from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has long lobbied for greater freedom to use US weaponry. However, Trump believes that this move will only escalate the conflict, stating, “We are just escalating this war and making it worse”. Trump has also expressed his desire to bring an end to the war, but acknowledges that it won’t be an easy task, saying, “I think that the Middle East is an easier problem to handle than what’s happening with Russia and Ukraine”.
It’s worth noting that Trump may review Biden’s decision if he becomes the next US president, as a member of Trump’s transition team mentioned that “most everything will be under review”. The US has provided significant support to Ukraine since the invasion, including $43 billion in aid, ranging from Javelin missiles to tanks and ambulances, as well as training for Ukrainian soldiers. The war has resulted in devastating losses and continues to pose significant challenges to global security.
