(The Post News)- President Yoon Suk Yeal of South Korea was impeached by lawmakers on December 14, 2024, over his declaration of martial law, which was met with widespread protests and opposition from the public. The impeachment vote, which required a two-thirds majority, passed with 204 lawmakers in favor and 85 against, with three abstentions. This marks the second time a South Korean president has been impeached, following Park Geun-hye’s removal in 2017.
The impeachment is a significant victory for the people of South Korea, who took to the streets to protest against the martial law declaration. Interim leader Han Duck-soo has pledged to stabilize the government and ensure a smooth transition. Opposition leader Park Chan-dae hailed the impeachment as a triumph for democracy, the constitution, and the rule of law.
Yoon’s fate now hangs in the balance as he awaits the Constitutional Court’s decision, which is expected within 180 days. The court’s verdict will determine whether Yoon’s presidency is officially terminated or if he is reinstated. The court’s composition is currently incomplete, with three vacant seats, which means a unanimous decision is required.
In related developments, several officials, including Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min, have been proposed for impeachment over their involvement in the martial law declaration. The opposition parties have also called for a special counsel investigation into President Yoon’s wife, Kim Keon-hee.
