Barcelona is considering signing up Chelsea reject Christopher Nkunku. Image: FIFA.
Nkunku, 27, has only started two league matches for the Blues, despite scoring twice in the competition. Instead, his standout performances have come in cup competitions, where he has netted 10 goals across the Carabao Cup and UEFA Conference League.
The lack of consistent top-flight minutes has left Nkunku frustrated, prompting his agent, Pini Zahavi, to explore potential moves. According to Sport 45, Zahavi has offered the player to La Liga leaders Barcelona, although any deal would likely happen in the summer transfer window rather than January. Chelsea manager Maresca remains adamant about keeping Nkunku, stating in November: “Christo didn’t tell me he’s unhappy. He wants to play, like many players, but I have no plans to let him leave in January.”
Maresca has favoured Nicolas Jackson as Chelsea’s primary striker, while Cole Palmer occupies the No. 10 role that suits Nkunku’s strengths. Despite this, Maresca insists Nkunku remains a valuable part of the squad. Nkunku joined Chelsea in 2023 for £53 million but endured a difficult first season, plagued by injuries under then-manager Mauricio Pochettino. Fully fit this season, his limited Premier League opportunities have reignited speculation about his future.
For Barcelona, Nkunku’s versatility as a striker and attacking midfielder could provide a boost to their squad. However, they are reportedly not considering a mid-season move, prioritising their pursuit of the player for the summer. As the season unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Nkunku will fight for his place in west London or push for a transfer to the Catalan giants.
