(The Post News)– The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party), President Jacob Zuma, and the National High Command released a statement on the 1st of January 2025 announcing the immediate suspensions of Dr. Kwazi Mbanjwa, Thobani Zuma, and Sfiso Zumah from the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Legislature, citing alleged misconduct and violations of the party’s constitution.
The MK Party has reiterated its “zero tolerance” for ill discipline and urged the suspended members to fully engage with the disciplinary process. The cases of the three members have been referred to the National Prosecutor for further investigation, where they will make representations during disciplinary hearings.
Dr. Kwazi Mbanjwa, who served as the Chief Whip in the KZN Provincial Legislature, has been removed from his position and suspended from legislative duties. Similarly, Thobani Zuma has been suspended as a legislator, while Sfiso Zuma, who held the role of Caucus Manager, received a cautionary suspension.
IOL News reported that Mbanjwa and Thobani Zuma were suspended due to the alleged refusal to transfer the control of millions of rands for constituency work to the newly formed KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Working Team. The suspension notice states that the two MPLs failed to comply with a directive issued on December 2 and subsequent reminders by December 4.
They also wrote to the KZN Legislature without proper consent from Zuma or the National High Command, unconstitutionally divulging confidential party information to third parties. The MKP accused the two of infringing various parts of the MKP constitution, including those mandating effective turnover of financial controls.
The MK Party’s leadership stressed that these measures reflect its commitment to accountability. In the statement, the party stated that it must prove its capacity to govern society with “dignity and integrity.” The MK Party, which marked its first anniversary as a formal political entity, says it remains committed to demonstrating accountability both internally and externally.
