(The Post News)– On Saturday, in a 2-1 victory, Alexander Isak extended his Premier League scoring streak as Newcastle United inflicted further suffering on Tottenham Hotspur due to injuries. Dominic Solanke’s first goal for Spurs was canceled out by Anthony Gordon, as both teams scored within the first half.
Then, Isak scored for the fifth straight league game, giving Newcastle their sixth successive victory across all competitions. The Magpies are still in fifth place, but they are now tied with Chelsea in fourth place for a spot in the Champions League the following season.
Spurs have only won one of their last eight league games since their thrilling 4-0 triumph over Premier League winners Manchester City, casting doubt on their hopes of finishing in the top four. Tottenham is now in 11th place in the standings, but if results don’t go their way, they might drop as low as 14th by the conclusion of the weekend, which would put more pressure on Ange Postecoglou.
However, Newcastle was left clinging in the closing moments, and a strong display from Postecoglou’s stretched side deserved more. Due to injuries, Spurs lost their starting goalie, Guglielmo Vicario, as well as defenders Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, and Ben Davies. Rodrigo Bentancur was also suspended.
Postecoglou was forced to start Brandon Austin for his Spurs debut after Fraser Forster, the stand-in keeper, fell unwell. Spur’s problems under Postecoglou have mostly been caused by slow starts, especially at home, but they got off to a great start. With a brilliant downward header from Pedro Porro’s cross on four minutes, Solanke made his case for international recognition in front of the onlookers, who were the incoming England manager, Thomas Tuchel.
Although the equaliser came under dubious circumstances, the lead lasted just over two minutes. Bruno Guimarães gained possession after Joelinton used his arm to stop Lucas Bergvall’s pass, and the Brazilian then fed in Gordon to score. The goal stood, though, after a VAR review determined that Joelinton’s handball was not intentional.
With his present form, Isak doesn’t need assistance finding the net, yet seven minutes before halftime, he scored from an undermanned Spurs defense. Jacob Murphy’s low cross was deflected into Radu Dragusin’s foot, allowing the Swedish striker to increase his season total to 14 goals across all competitions.
Dragusin, who had been doubtful because of sickness, was sent off at halftime, dealing Spurs another blow and depriving Postecoglou of a natural center-back. Djed Spence, a full-back, and Archie Gray, a midfielder, were excellent substitutes as Tottenham exerted all of the pressure in the second half.
Martin Dubravka parried Pape Sarr’s attempt, and Brennan Johnson blasted off the post. Spurs had the luxury of adding Son Heung-min and James Maddison off the bench in their pursuit of an equalizer, despite their dearth of personnel at the back. Johnson and Sergio Reguilon both hammered low attempts across the face of goal after Maddison flashed a curling shot from a short corner that was inches wide. However, Newcastle persevered to finish off an incredible holiday season for Eddie Howe’s team, which has put them in the running for a Champions League comeback.
