(The Post News)- Chippa United expressed their astonishment and annoyance over the postponed match, which was meant to take place this coming weekend, in a forceful statement made on Monday. According to the statement, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) postponed the match without an explanation after they had made all the logistical preparations.
Meanwhile, reports have stated that even though the league resumed late last year after the brief holiday season, Royal AM players are still at home. This adds another layer of drama to a turbulent season for Royal AM. The KwaZulu-Natal team last played on December 29 and lost 3-1 to TS Galaxy at Harry Gwala Stadium. Players were given a few days off but were not given a definitive return date. On Tuesday morning, players were informed of the postponed match but were not given an explanation for the decision.
Additionally, the club instructed players to return to training on Wednesday but later cancelled the training session without giving any reason. FIFA had previously prohibited the club from registering new players because they had failed to pay former player Samir Nurkovic his R12 million salary, which is now over R15 million with accrued interest.
Sportswire reported that, according to people close to the club, there is a lot of conjecture about the reasons behind the absence from training. According to some sources, the club may have had its assets frozen by SARS, while others assert that players have not received their salaries for several months.
Some contend, however, that the club’s assets might have been protected from such a freeze because it was registered under a trust. Another option is that the FIFA order has been implemented, which might lead to the team losing points or possibly being relegated because they didn’t pay Nurkovic.
The issue is now even more unclear as a result of the PSL’s silence on the subject. The lack of transparency has sparked worries, even if the league may be trying to safeguard its interests. Sportswire reported that Richards Makhoba, general manager of Royal AM, was unable to be reached for comment, citing illness. This evasive remark is consistent with Makhoba’s tendency to steer clear of direct responses.
Makhoba has come under fire for allegedly deceiving Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize, the club owner, and for not carrying out his responsibilities. MaMkhize’s financial status has also drawn criticism. Her assets have been held because of a substantial tax bill owed to SARS.
With eight points from 11 games, Royal AM is now one point above Magesi FC in second-from-bottom place, raising doubts over the team’s future in the current campaign.
