(The Post News)- South Africa clinched a dominant 10-wicket victory over Pakistan in the second Test at Newlands, completing a clean sweep of their home summer Tests. This triumph marks the Proteas’ seventh consecutive Test win, their best run since a nine-match streak between October 2002 and May 2003.
Captain Temba Bavuma’s decision to enforce the follow-on after dismissing Pakistan for 194 seemed decisive. However, the visitors showed grit, posting 478 in their second innings. South Africa, needing just 58 runs to win, saw David Bedingham and Aiden Markram chase down the target in 7.1 overs.
Kagiso Rabada spearheaded the bowling attack with six wickets across two innings, while young fast bowler Kwena Maphaka impressed with his disciplined spell, including the crucial wicket of Pakistan captain Shan Masood, who had anchored the innings with a stoic 145.
“Spending two days in the field can only make us better,” Bavuma said, reflecting on the challenging match. His unblemished record as Test captain now stands at eight wins and one draw.
The Proteas’ victory sets the stage for the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s in June. Head coach Shukri Conrad hinted at arranging additional fixtures to prepare the team.
Maphaka, who has quickly risen through the ranks, looks set for a bright future. His bond with coach Conrad and the guidance of senior players like Rabada bolster his confidence. “As a cricketer, my coach backs me 100%, so I can back myself,” Maphaka said, reflecting on his early success.
With this win, South Africa’s Test cricket future appears promising, driven by a blend of seasoned players and emerging talent.
