(The Post News)- The class of 2024 in South Africa has set a new record by achieving an 87.3% pass rate. This is the highest matriculation pass rate the country has received since the dawn of democracy.
Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube, during her address to the nation on Monday, said the matric pass rate is not the only important figure in education, but it is a strong indicator of progress.
The pass rate has increased by 4.4% from 82.9% in 2023. The Free State being the country’s top-performing province, followed by KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. [
KwaZulu-Natal led the country with the highest bachelor passes, followed by Gauteng and the Eastern Cape province.
Minister Gwarube acknowledged the efforts of teachers, learners and the community. Furthermore, she congratulated the Class of 2024 for the resilience they have showcased in their high school journey, which began during the coronavirus pandemic.
“This achievement is not solely the work of government but also the result of the unwavering efforts of teachers, learners, and the community,” said Gwarube.
Some of you had to adapt to online learning and cope with limited resources. Navigating a world where teaching and learning became immensely difficult was no small feat. Yet, you persevered, demonstrating that challenges are not roadblocks but stepping stones to greatness.”
The atrocities faced by the Class of 2024 in their high school career ranged from pandemic-related disruptions to civil unrest and load shedding. Their determination is exemplary, and their perseverance is commendable.
