(The Post News)– On Thursday at Old Trafford, Manchester United defeated Southampton 3-1 in the English Premier League courtesy of a spectacular 12-minute hat trick from Amad Diallo. Just before Amad Diallo altered the tide of the contest at a boisterous Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim’s team seemed to be headed for a fourth consecutive league loss at home.
During the 82nd minute, Amad tied the score, and eight minutes later, he put United ahead, finishing in style with a third goal deep into stoppage time. It was unfortunate for the Saints team that was trying to escape being the poorest team in Premier League history at the end of the season.
A goal from Manuel Ugarte gave Ivan Juric’s team the lead just before the end of the first half, and they had more chances to extend it. United’s victory in the FA Cup on Sunday lifted their spirits against Arsenal following a tense 2-2 draw with league leaders Liverpool. They had a point to prove to their loyal home fans, though, as three straight Premier League defeats brought to light the massive amount of rebuilding work that new manager Amorim faces.
After charging into the penalty area, the vivacious Kamaldeen Sulemana caused Andre Onana to make a brilliant save as the visitors swiftly settled in. The host team could have taken the lead in the 20th minute after a flowing play down the left, but Alejandro Garnacho swerved terribly wide after being spotted by Rasmus Hojlund, despite their poor start.
Southampton, who had only won one league game this season going into Old Trafford, were playing with poise and confidence. With an outstretched hand, Onana made a spectacular double save to deny Tyler Dibling, and then he hurried to his feet to deny Mateus Fernandes from close range. And following a clumsy corner by the United defense in the 43rd minute, the visitors scored the goal they so richly deserved.
