(The Post News)– British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Thursday to sign a 100-year partnership treaty. Starmer pledged to put Ukraine in the “strongest possible position” with the “landmark” 100-year pact with the war-stricken country.
The solidarity showcased by Starmer comes amid diplomatic uncertainty as to whether newly elected United States President Donald Trump will maintain its support for Ukraine in the war against Russia. An estimated one million casualties or injuries have been recorded in the war so far. The invasion reaches the end of its third year with Ukraine losing territory in the east.
President Zelensky praised the stance of the United Kingdom in the Russia-Ukraine War despite the concerns of Donald Trump reducing aid. Met by an air raid upon his arrival in Kyiv, Starmer said it was a “reminder of the daily attacks and the resolve of the Ukrainian people.” Starmer told Zelensky that they will stand on Ukraine’s side for a hundred years—long after this horrible war is finished and Ukraine is free and prospering once more.
He also asserted that the United Kingdom will work with all its allies to ensure that any deal ending the Russia-Ukraine war would be strong enough to “guarantee Ukraine’s security” and “deter any future aggression.” Zelensky has previously asked for the United Kingdom and other European allies such as France to deploy troops to Ukraine for a peacekeeping operation after the war. Although Starmer has not confirmed whether he will meet Zelensky’s request, his response to the matter was: “It’s really important that Ukraine is put in the strongest possible position.”
