(The Post News)– Orlando Pirates have started their Nedbank Cup title defence on a high note, securing a 3-1 victory over Richards Bay at the King Zwelithini Stadium this afternoon to progress to the last 16.
Patrick Maswanganyi was the star of the show, netting twice in the first half. His first came in the 22nd minute after a clever link-up with Relebohile Mofokeng, and just four minutes later, the duo combined again to make it 2-0.
Despite the strong start, the Pirates lost momentum, allowing Richards Bay to find their rhythm. The Natal Rich Boyz were unlucky not to score when Thato Mohlame’s shot struck the post, and Somila Ntsundwana’s volley went just wide before the break.
The home side pulled one back early in the second half when Yanela Mbuthuma capitalised on a rebound after Pirates goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi failed to hold onto the ball. Richards Bay continued to press and created several opportunities but failed to make them count. Pirates weathered the storm and sealed the win deep in injury time. Tshegofatso Mabasa latched onto a through ball from Kabelo Dlamini to score the third and ensure the Buccaneers advanced.
While the win secures the Pirates a place in the next round, their second-half performance will raise questions about consistency. Richards Bay, meanwhile, can be proud of a spirited display despite the result.
