(The Post News)– Janusz Walus, a Polish immigrant and right-wing extremist, spent 30 years in jail for the assassination of the then South African Communist Party (SACP) leader Chris Hani. Hani was shot on 10 April 1993 outside his Dawn Park home in Boksburg.
Walus was arrested alongside Clive Derby Lewis, a prominent member of the Conservative Party and a staunch right-wing ideologue, who was arrested for providing the weapon used in the murder aimed to destabilise South Africa’s transition to democracy.
In the exclusive interview with ENCA, Walus says that his actions for killing Hani were purely politically motivated while also stating that he only regrets killing a husband and a father but does not regret doing it for political reasons. He also insisted that there was no involvement from either the African National Congress (ANC) or the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC), noting that Hani’s security personnel, the ANC, and PAC were not in any way involved in the assassination.
According to Walus, he is not aware of the secrets that Clive died knowing; however, he does know that Clive would never have worked with any ANC members, as it would have been considered treason. He mentioned that he also knows that he had no connection with any of the National Party (NP) or security forces. He explained that he was instructed to spy on the alleged right-wing activities; therefore, he just finished his set of beneficial tasks for the moment.
A hit list of nine names was found in his flat; Nelson Mandela and Joe Slovo were numbers one and two on the list. Walus has also made unfounded claims that Jacob Zuma wanted to meet with Clive. Walus believes that he should have gotten amnesty because his assassination of Hani was purely political and not personal.
